Hammer Throw - Tips for Athletes

One of the most popular events in the track and field contest is Hammer Throwing. This type of sport was developed numerous centuries ago in England, Ireland and Scotland. The hammer throwing occasion can be traced back to an instance when the Tailteann games were taking place in Tara.

This competition was done by an athlete taking and alternation of the object on top of the head and throwing it as far as could be with the athlete standing in one spot. The distance thrown was then measured from the line where the athlete stood that was marked down on the field. The longest distance hammer throw recorded then was 130 to 140 feet.

Graham Ford is appointed as Sri Lanka coach

Ford’s selection comes in the background of massive overhaul the Sri Lankan sports ministry has initiated in a bid to get better the standard of the game in the emerald islands.

The 51-year old started his coaching career with Natal in the year 1992 and was later on selected as an assistant coach to late Bob Woolmer when the team made it to the 1999 World Cup semis. Ford has also served as the director of cricket at Kent.

Tennis:Clijsters in semi finals of Australian Open

Kim Clijsters kept her Australian Open title defence on track by moving into the semi-finals with success over Caroline Wozniacki. The loss also stripped the Dane of her number one ranking in the process. Showing no signs of the ankle injury continued in her thrilling fourth-round win over Li Na - a match in which she had to save four match points - the Belgian had too much know-how for Wozniacki, whose search for a maiden grand slam title goes on.

It looked plain sailing for a uncontrolled Clijsters as she raced into a set and 5-2 lead only for Wozniacki to launch an inspiring fightback. But it proved in vain, Clijsters' greater experience shining through as she clinched a 6-3 7-6 (7/4) win and a last-four spot against Victoria Azarenka. "It definitely didn't feel like I was up a set and 5-2, Caroline is a very consistent player and a fighter and she became more aggressive," said Clijsters.

"I am happy to get through and not have to go to a three-setter as it's so hot." The result will add weight to the argument of those who believe Wozniacki was not worthy of top spot, with the legendary Martina Navratilova on Monday demanding the WTA revamp the current rankings system. The 22-year-old has been at the summit for 67 of the past 68 weeks but the door now opens for Petra Kvitova, Azarenka and Maria Sharapova with the individuality of the new number one determined by how the next few days in Melbourne pan out.

Football Preview: Schalke vs Stuttgart

Schalke fans will have to wait until after Saturday's game against Stuttgart before finding out whether Raul will give himself to a longer stay at the club. The Spaniard's agreement expires in the summer and, while he has already signalled an eagerness to stay on in Gelsenkirchen, discussions have not actually taken place yet. Talks have now been scheduled for after Saturday afternoon's first Bundesliga fixture of 2012.

"Talks about a possible contract extension with Raul are on the agenda," said Schalke's director of sport Horst Heldt at the pre-match press conference. "There is nothing new." The focus for now, then, is making a winning start to 2012 to leave the club in an even better position from which to try and convince the former Real Madrid striker to carry on. "If you start (the year) with a win, then things are a lot easier," said Coach Hub Stevens.

"We are at home in front of our great fans and we have a lot of self-confidence; we have self-confidence but no fear - that is the right way."Stuttgart is also keen to make a winning start to the New Year as they look to keep in touch with the top six. However, they are without five regulars, three of whom could be missing until the middle of February. Arthur Boka, Ibrahima Traore and Mahamdou Bah are all contribute in the African Nations Cup while Christian Gentner and Shinji Okazaki are both carrying knocks.

Djokovic moves to semis in Abu Dhabi

World No 1 Novak Djokovic saw off Gael Monfils to reach the semi-finals of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi. The Serb defeated the forceful Frenchman 6-2 4-6 6-2 at the showing event to book a date with the man who ended his 43-match winning run in the summer, Roger Federer. Djokovic had ended the 2011 season with two tired losses at London's ATP World Tour Finals but the short rest seemed to have served him well, judging by what was a convincing, if low-tempo success.

"I was working on some things throughout the match," Djokovic said. "I was trying to find a good rhythm and I think I was playing really well for this stage. But I am not yet 100 per cent ready." David Ferrer like a three-set win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Spaniard came from a set down to post a 2-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 win and will now meet compatriot Rafael Nadal in Friday's semi-finals.

After four closely-fought games, Tsonga reeled off four in a row to claim the first set. Ferrer broke serve for the first time to lead 3-2 in the second when the Frenchman netted a forehand, but Tsonga just broke straight back. A tie-break followed and Ferrer took it to square the match. Tsonga formed the shot of the match - a dazzling forehand pass on the run - to save the first set point, but Ferrer grabbed the second chance with both hands to set up a decider.

Boxing: Murray ready to face Rios

Manchester fighter John Murray is aim to follow in the track of Ricky Hatton and overcome America on Saturday night when he faces Brandon Rios. The 26-year-old, who has already held British and European titles, now takes a huge step up to world level when he faces WBA lightweight champion Rios at Madison Square Garden in New York. "This is by far the biggest bout of my career to date," said Murray. "To be fighting in the 'Mecca' of boxing, Madison Square Garden, for the world title is the whole reason I got into this sport in the first place.

"If you don't want to have nights like this then there is no point being in this game. I've fought over in America in the past and have won each time, so I aim to carry on that run on December 3rd against Rios. "Hatton had many great nights in America and I hope that I'm the next Manchester fighter who can win there." Murray's last bout was a fast encounter against British rival Kevin Mitchell, which the latter won, but he feels that he has come back stronger from defeat and it will help him beat Rios.

He said: "This is a great stage for me to bounce back after my defeat to Mitchell. Since that loss we've been back in the gym and have gone back to basics. "I've been working on moving my feet and legs a lot more, I think the loss was the kick-up-the-bum I needed to reignite my motivation for the sport. Training and infighting have been going extremely well and I'm looking forward to just getting back in the ring and putting on a good show." Murray knows that if he is to bring the world title back to Manchester with him, he will need to be at his best in opposition to the unbeaten American.

Federer victorious at Paris Masters

Roger Federer ended Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's hopes of claiming the Paris Masters with a clinical show that saw him take a 69th career title with a 6-1 7-6 (7/3) win. Federer, who ended a 10-month wait for a tour success in Basle last week, continued to build drive ahead of the ATP World Tour finals in London later this month with a first win at a competition that has always eluded him in the past. He blew away his French rival away in winning the first set in just 30 minutes, before he coped with some much better tennis from Tsonga to edge the second on a tie-break.

Tsonga has twice beaten Federer this year and looked as though he could record a third upset when he forced two break points in the first game of the match. Federer did not lose his composure and clung on to go 1-0 up. Tsonga's own service game started with two strong deliveries but Federer soon found his feet and broke his opponent at the first attempt. Federer's serve was soon looking impassable and Tsonga made a handful of natural errors as 3-0 became 5-1, leaving the Swiss to serve for the set.

Tsonga managed to save one set point but could only delay the inevitable. The second set saw Tsonga give the home fans more to cheer as he tightened up on serve and put Federer under more pressure. The score reached 2-1 on serve before Tsonga unsuccessful to convert a good chance to make his first break in the fourth game. He went close again with the score at 4-3, a superb backhand giving him break point and a line judge's call stopping him going 5-3 in front. As it was the pair could not be praised separately and it reached a tie-break at 6-6.

Sachin, Zaheer gains same position in ICC rankings

Sachin Tendulkar stays the highest placed Indian batsman at fifth position, while Zaheer Khan held on to his sixth spot in the bowling chart of the latest ICC Test rankings. Rahul Dravid, unchanged at 10th, was the only other Indian batman in the top-10. Meanwhile, Kumar Sangakkara edged nearer to recapture the number-one position in the Rankings for Test batsmen after hitting a match-saving double century against Pakistan in the first Test at Abu Dhabi which concluded on Saturday.

Sangakkara, whose 211 also earned him the man of the match award, has gained 29 points for his brilliant effort and he is now just 31 points away from reclaiming the number-one position which is currently held by South Africa's Jacques Kallis. Sangakkara, who had surged to the top of the batting table in December 2007, had lost the popular position earlier this year to Tendulkar and Kallis after the two batsmen stroked dazzling centuries in the drawn Test in Cape Town.

The main mover in the batting table is Taufeeq Umar, the Pakistan opener, who has gained 17 places after his epic 236 which came off 496 balls. The 30-year-old from Lahore is now in 46th position. Also heading in the right direction are Azhar Ali in 33rd (up by one place), Angelo Mathews in 37th (up by two places), Prasanna Jayawardene in 48th (up by two places), Mohammad Hafeez in 60th (up by six places) and Asad Shafiq in 90th (up by six places).

Debutants guide easy win for New Zealand

Debutants Rob Nicol and Doug Bracewell led New Zealand to a easy nine-wicket win over Zimbabwe in their series opener in Harare. Bracewell's early three-wicket burst helped reduce the hosts to 21 for four and, though Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor (128 not out) and Forster Mutizwa - the only batsmen to reach double figures - led a fightback to 231 for six, Nicol's century powered the Black Caps to 232 for one and victory with more than six overs to spare.

Bracewell flew out of the traps to remove top three Vusi Sibanda, Chamu Chibabha and Hamilton Masakadza with just 12 on the board and Tatenda Taibu quickly followed, extremely caught by Kane Williamson at cover off James Franklin. But Taylor and Mutizwa battled back, the captain reaching a guilty half-century from 66 balls with four fours. Andy McKay palming the ball over the boundary.

Mutizwa reached his own half-century from 85 balls, with only two boundaries, but then began to open up with a six off Nathan McCullum followed by a boundary off Franklin. But he paid the price when he chased a wide delivery from the latter and edged to give keeper Brendon McCullum his third catch and end a stand of 156.

Guptill fell for 74 when he holed out to Kyle Jarvis off Masakadza but Nicol pressed on and reached his century with his 11th boundary from his 120th delivery, bowled by Christopher Mpofu. By that stage, just a handful of runs were needed for victory, and Nicol hit the winning single off Sibanda in the 44th over to finish 108no, with Brendon McCullum 39no at the other end.

Bangladesh thrash Windies by 8 wickets

Bangladesh renovates some pride as they thrashed West Indies by eight wickets in the third and final ODI in Chittagong. Two behind in the three-game series, the home side ended on a high as they bowled the tourists out for a meagre 61 - the second-lowest total in their memorable history - and then chased down the runs they required in a watchful 20 overs to seal the win.

Only two West Indies batsman - Kieran Powell (25) and Carlos Braithwaite (11) made double figures, though, as Shakib Al Hasan (four for 16) ripped through their line-up on his way to 150 ODI wickets. With the skies still heavy when they started their response, the home side also found the going tough but resolutely managed to keep the greater part of their wickets intact.

Pinch-hitting openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes took them to 24 without loss from the first four overs, although their partnership was ended. A collapse of West Indies extent looked a possibility 13 balls and five runs later when Shahriar Nafees lost his stumps to Marlon Samuels, but Mushfiqur Rahim joined Tamim at the crease and the two put on a ship-steadying partnership of 32 to see them over the line. Tamim`s 62-ball 36 was the match-winner, with Mushfiqur adding a careful 10.

Djokovic to end 2011 as high

Novak Djokovic will end the year as world number one, it has been confirmed. The Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open champion has been the leading player of 2011 and another honour will now be added to his CV. A third-round defeat for Rafael Nadal at the Shanghai Masters on Thursday - he lost to Florian Mayer - means Djokovic, who hit the peak for the first time in his career following his Wimbledon success in July, can no longer be fixed at the top of the rankings.

The Serb will end the season as top dog for the first time after an excellent campaign which has so far seen him lose only three matches - and two of those have come via injury retirements. After starting the year with 41 consecutive match wins, Djokovic presently holds a win-loss record of 64-3 for the season, a run which has brought him 10 titles in total. Djokovic will receive his year-end number one trophy during the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London next month - providing he has recovered from a back injury by then.

Forced to miss the Shanghai tournament due to the problem, Djokovic is currently scheduled to return to the court in Basel at the start of next month, while he is also due to play the Paris Masters before heading to London. The Serb becomes the 16th player to end the season as world number one since the introduction of the ranking system in 1973. He also ends the seven-year domination of the year-end top ranking by Nadal and Roger Federer.

Mitchell Marsh in Aus ODI Squad

Australia replaces Brett Lee with all-rounder Mitchell Marsh after the fast bowler had his appendix removed. Marsh was already with the squad on their tour of South Africa and Australia's selectors determined he should remain for the one-day series. Lee had been ruled out of the Twenty20 and ODIs after being diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent successful surgery in Cape Town on Monday.

Australia's National Selection Panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said: "Mitchell is a very exciting young all-rounder who we think has the ability to have a major impact at international level."He played extremely well during the recent Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and is a pace bowler who has the ability to bat in the top six, providing great balance and elasticity to the squad.

"The one-day squad already has four specialist fast bowlers in Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Johnson, James Pattinson and Patrick Cummins so the NSP did not consider it necessary to replace Brett with a specialist fast bowler."Mitchell was very close to selection in the one-day squad when it was primarily picked and Brett's unlucky illness has provided a great chance for him to gain more experience at the international level."

Brett Lee out of South Africa Tour

Brett Lee, Australia fast bowler, has been ruled out of the South Africa tour due to appendicitis. He will undergo surgery in Cape Town on Monday night and is probable to be out of cricket for six to eight weeks. Australia is yet to name a replacement for Lee in the one-day and Twenty20 squads.

"Brett complained of some abdominal pain after arriving in Cape Town on Sunday," Alex Kountoris, Australia team physiotherapist said. "After consulting specialists and having the related investigations he has been diagnosed with appendicitis. He will obviously be ruled out of the Twenty20 and ODI series in South Africa."

Lee's illness could mean Johnson is flown in earlier but it may also open the door for Peter Siddle, to make his mark in the limited-overs formats. Other options include Ryan Harris, who improved from a hamstring strain after the recent Sri Lanka series but has been talked about as a Test match only player or one of Trent Copeland or Mitchell Starc, who played against South Africa A in a tri-series in Zimbabwe in June.
