Main tricks of Carrom Game

Carrom men discs or coins are important in this game as the player has to hit it to the pockets using another main disc known as “striker” or “puck” around a carrom board. This game is very interesting just like chess and billiards where special tricks are the main thing to win the game.

Side Shot

Side shot is a trick can be used to hit your coin into a pocket or your competitor's coins out of the way. Hit the striker so that it goes by your aimed disc with just the part of your puck in contact with the part of the coin. Hit the striker ahead and as it goes by the coin it will push the coin in the opposite of the side that was hit. For example, flicking the disc on the right direction will push it to the opposite direction. Use this to hit side pockets or to affect a possible move from your competitor.

Second Hit

This trick can be used to pocket two coins at a single shot if a coin is blocking your hit to another coin on the carrom board. Target the coin which can hit another coin to reach the pocket in a straight line path.

Middle Shot

Middle shot is a kind of a tricky method in this game which can be done at the starting stage of the game. When all the coins are placed on the middle of the carrom board this shot helps you to hit two coins simultaneously. When two coins are adjacent to each other by touching one another, hit the striker to shot the space between the two coins. If it hit the gap then the two coins should move in opposite directions and reach two different pockets at the same time.

Thumb Shot

There are no rules to use a single finger to hit the striker so you can use your thumb for a stronger hit. Form a circle by using your thumb and index finger and shot the coin by moving your thumb forward at the striker.

Alley Oop

One can use this method while playing doubles game. You should hit the striker to place the coin near the pocket and your partner should pocket it during his/her turn. Amdavad’s kite champion

Seventy-five-year-old Mohammad Hanif Shaikh can rightly say he is the only “official” kite champion of the city. For, after he won the last kite championship in 1958 no such event was organised.Shaikh definitely remembers the cold January 17, 1958 morning. A total of 151 people, including Shaikh who was a conductor with AMTS then and his “guru” Mehndi Hussein Kadri, were participating in the competition. “We were separated in groups of eight each. We would struggle among ourselves with the winner advancing to the next round.”

There was somes breeze blowing across the grand Malek Saban Stadium, Shaikh recalls. “It was not the perfect day to fly a kite, but the atmosphere gave you a good feel. I knew it was going to be our day — Kadri Sahab’s and mine. And by the grace of the god, the day unfolded just as I had thought until my guru’s lost in the semi-final.”It was devastating for Kadri, but he did not lose heart. “He came over to me when I was flying the kite and started encouraging me. “I still remember the moment when the last kite fell from the sky and Kadri Sa’ab lifted me in the air. I was happy but I think he was happier.”

Shaikh received a cash prize of Rs 101 from the hands of Parvati Baronet, the city’s first lady. He was later promoted to the post of AMTS traffic controller.“Actually, I was more into carrom and had played at the national level. Since I used to win a lot of carrom matches, I always nursed the goal and also thought that these victories will get me a promotion. But it was kite flying that raised my stature.” Even today Shaikh goes on the terrace with his grandchildren. Sometimes he takes the firki in his hands and sometimes he gives tips to fellow flyers.

University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) celebrated its month-long sports and cultural festival, Fiesta 2010, newly. Special sports actions were organized for the girls, which included cricket, badminton, throwball, carrom, chess and table tennis. Short cricket, T20, long cricket, volley ball, basket ball and athletics were also thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.Quick Bhojana or cooking with no fire was organized for the first time and the students came up with a lot of creative ideas.

Hogathon, where in delicious food was provided, turned out to be every student’s favourite event. Avalanche, an adventure occasion, pushed the students to their physical limits.Treasure Hunt showed corners of the college hitherto unknown to even the senior students. The quiz contest gave the students an opportunity to showcase their knowledge. Events like Photography, Multitasking and Potpourri proved that no area was left ignored. The singing competition saw extremely gifted and talented participants enthralling the audience with their musical version.

The music bands too impressed everyone with their skill and co-ordination. The dance event included both traditional and Western styles. The festival ended with a highly enjoyable Indian fashion show, which was conducted with grace and glamour.On the event, Venugopal K R, College Principal said that it was essential for students to participate in cultural and sports events in order to develop a balanced personality. Their intrinsic talents are showing through such cultural activities, he added.
