Robson and Broady advances to second round

British pair Laura Robson and Naomi Broady both made it through to the 2nd round of qualifying at the US Open with straight-sets triumphs. Robson, who has fallen in the final round of qualifying in both of the previous two years at Flushing Meadows, made one more positive start against Canada's Heidi El Tabakh.

The 17-year-old, who reached the second round of a grand slam for the first time at Wimbledon in June, raced into a 5-0 lead and was always on top in a 6-1 6-3 victory. Things were not quite so straightforward for Broady, who is playing in US Open qualifying for the first time.

She found herself up against US wild card Robin Anderson and, after edging the first set on a tie-break, she improved from letting a 4-0 lead slip in the second to success 7-6 (7/2) 7-5.Robson will meet home hope Taylor Townsend in round two after the 15-year-old beat Arantxa Parra Santonja today, while Broady faces either Laura Thorpe or Chang Kai-chen.
