McIlroy plans return

New US Open champion Rory McIlroy has pulled out of next week's French Open following his victory at Congressional. McIlroy has opted to follow the model of fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell, who missed the similar tournament last year to let his main title success sink in.

However while McDowell returned to action for the Scottish Open, the 22-year-old McIlroy is now not set to play again until The Open at Sandwich on July 14-17.World number three and US PGA winner Martin Kaymer is now the only top-10 player in the field at Le Golf National.

There are just nine from the top 50, although big-hitting American left-hander Bubba Watson will make his first start in a non-major in Europe. Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez won the title last year at the course near Paris, which will host the 2018 Ryder Cup.
