Brian Cardinal to join as Athletics staff

NBA champion and Purdue alumnus Brian Cardinal has united with Purdue Athletics staff as an athletics management intern. Once the NBA Lockout is resolved, Cardinal will have the option to play again."Brian is someone I've known for a long time, and he's always been a great representative for Purdue," head Coach Matt Painter said. "His work ethic and dedication reflect the values of our department, and we're excited to have him as a member of the staff."

Cardinal's spot will include working with the John Purdue Club and John R. Wooden Leadership Institute. He will also guide student-athletes and carry out non-coaching day-to-day activities. Cardinal will also help to coordinate championship events at Purdue with the women's basketball NCAA first and second rounds and the 2012 Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

Cardinal has played in the NBA for 11 years, serving the Dallas Mavericks to their first NBA championship last season. During his time Cardinal went to four NCAA Tournaments and the Elite Eight in 2000. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and was selected as the John Wooden Most Valuable Player as a senior. "It feels great to be coming home to Purdue," Cardinal said. "I've always been proud to be a Boilermaker, and I'm excited to get in there and get to work."

Indian athletes flunk dope test

Doping came back to trouble Indian athletics with two top women quarter-milers returning positive for a banned substance in tests conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The 'A' samples of the two 400m runners taken by an international agency International Doping Tests and Management of Sweden tested at National Dope Testing Laboratory here had returned positive for banned substance.

One of the two was a part of the women's 400m relay quartet that had won gold in the Commonwealth Games here last October and in the Asian Games in Guangzhou last November. The other had missed out a stage finish in the 400m race in the Asian Games.
The banned substance is probable to be revealed only after 'B' sample test results. Both the athletes had their 'B' samples tested on Monday.

The increase is a huge setback for the country as both were in the yet-to-be-announced Indian team for the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Kobe, Japan from July 7.They will have to be dropped from the team if their 'B' samples test positive. The IAAF is expected to enforce a temporary two-year suspension if the 'B' sample results also test positive for the banned drug.
