Former world No.1 Dinara Safina will not play again in 2011 due to a persistent back injury. The Russian, who has been out of action since early May, is set to miss the US Open after also being missing from the French Open and Wimbledon. Safina has fall down the world rankings over the last two years and has even cast uncertainty on whether she will make a spirited return to the WTA Tour.
"I'm unhappy to report that my back is still acting up and I will not be able to play until at least the end of the year," she said on her official website. She added: "I don't know how long my time out is going to last because I don't want to suffer myself and my body anymore."
