To make sure foolproof security, nearly 1400 cops will be deployed in and around the Punjab Cricket Association stadium, which is set to host its first match of the World Cup on Thursday between Netherlands and South Africa. As part of three-tier security arrangements inside and outside the stadium, 60 CCTV cameras will keep a hawk eye on the movement of people, Mohali's Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rajwinder Singh Sohal said here today.
"The deployment of cops will include those from the traffic, mounted police, women cops, migration teams and anti-sabotage team," Sohal said. Six superintendent of police (SP), over 30 DSPs and about 1,000 constables would form part of the force that will be deployed. He said that adequate parking lots had been kept for the public so that they dont face any inconvenience. Sohal said though there was no specific terror threat as such, yet they were taking no chances with the security.
"We have intensified checkings in hotels and restaurants in Mohali and are keeping an eye on anti-social elements," he said. The deputy superintendent of police (DSP) said that for the semi-final here on March 30, additional police force will be deployed to build up the security arrangement. Before the semifinal, the 28,000 capacity PCA stadium will also play host to a league match on March 11 featuring Ireland and West Indies.
He said that Punjab police was also coordinating with the police in neighbouring Union Territory Chandigarh, where the teams would be staying. Meanwhile, Chandigarh Police has also beefed up the security arrangements. Six DSPs will supervise the safety arrangements while extra forces will be deployed this time at the hotel where the teams will stay.
