National boxing: Delhi women on top

It was mixed luck for Delhi boxers on Monday in the ongoing 11th senior national women’s boxing championship in Thrissur, with success and beat in equal measures. While Geeta Solanki of Delhi won her bout against Neha Kashyap of Madhya Pradesh in the women’s 54kg category, in the the 48kg category, Aarti registered an impressive 9-1 win in a one-sided contest against Sarita Vishwakarma of Uttarakhand. However, Savita Rawat was completely outclassed by Pavitra of Haryana in the 57kg category in the opening session of the day, losing 14-1. Shabana, meanwhile, lost to World Championship participant L Sarita Devi 3-0 in the 51kg.

The national capital continued to lead in points on the second day of competition as well after an impressive presentation in the opening rounds on Day One. Geeta was announced the winner in a close match that saw both boxers match each other punch for punch. Kashyap, in fact, was was off the mark early on, taking a two-point lead in the first round. She managed two more in the second while Geeta also opened her scoring. The third round remained pointless as both boxers adopted a defensive stance but Geeta was able to garner two crucial points in the dying seconds of the last round to level scores.

With both tied on points 4-4 after the three rounds, Geeta won 9-11 on countback.Aarti, however, had no such problems. After a cautious, defensive start that saw the opening round remain scoreless, Aarti scored a couple of points in the second round while Sarita managed one to stay close. But it was the third round that all but decided the bout. Aarti determined to change her strategy and came off in attacking mode immediately after the break, reeling off strong jabs and direct punches to completely take her opponent by surprise. Aarti notched up six points in the round to race to an 8-1 lead as all Sarita could do was try and protect herself in the face of Aarti’s onslaught.
